Women in perimenopause and menopause who have been avoiding their mammogram, are confused about breast density, or have ever been told a finding is ‘probably benign’ and sent home without follow-up — this episode is for you.
Most women who develop breast cancer have no family history. The two biggest risk factors are being female and getting older. Annual screening mammography starting at age 40 is one of the most important things an average-risk woman can do for herself. And yet the fear, the confusion about dense tissue, and the misinformation circulating about screening are keeping women away from the one tool most likely to catch something early enough to do something about it.
Dr. Robyn Roth is a breast radiologist and the founder of The Boobie Docs, a platform she created in 2020 to replace fear, shame, and misinformation with clear, proactive breast health education. Her perspective was shaped by personal family experience: two cousins developed breast cancer after advocating for themselves about a suspicious lump, and one was initially told the finding was ‘probably benign’ before she pushed for a biopsy that confirmed invasive ductal breast cancer. Both cousins were BRCA1-positive. That experience is why Dr. Roth will not let women be dismissed.
In this conversation she explains who is at risk and why age matters more than most people realize, what dense breast tissue actually means on a mammogram and why it can both hide cancer and raise risk, when to add supplemental imaging like ultrasound or MRI, what calcifications are and why they are one of the earliest and most important mammography findings, how to do a meaningful breast self-exam, and the one sentence every woman should say if she is ever dismissed about a breast concern.
What You Will Learn
- Why anyone with breast tissue can develop breast cancer, why being female and getting older are the two biggest risk factors, and why annual screening mammography starting at age 40 is the most evidence-backed tool for average-risk women
- What dense breast tissue means on a mammogram — why dense tissue can both hide cancer and independently raise risk, when supplemental imaging like ultrasound or MRI is indicated, and why mammography must come first before ultrasound for women 30 and older
- How to know what is normal for your own breasts, what calcifications are and why they matter, how to do a meaningful self-exam covering the full breast area including the armpit and clavicle, and what to say when you feel dismissed by a provider
